Magpies boss Gary Mills revealed that Mildenhall was available on a free transfer after the 26-year-old refused to take a wage cut following the club's relegation to the Third Division.
The Meadow Lane chief added they would start with Saul Deeney as number one when the new campaign commenced in August and that the club would look for a new keeper once Mildenhall had moved on.
Despite Mills's claims that Mildenhall is free to leave, the club have stressed that the custodian has not been officially listed.
"Mildenhall is not officially on the transfer list - despite reports to the contrary," read the statement on the club's official website.
"Steve is one of the two highest earners at the club, still being on a large contract.
"This contract includes significant pay rises each year and there is also a clause in the contract stating the player has to be transfer-listed, if the club is not in Division One by the start of the 2004/05 season.
"However, his contract runs until June 2005."
