Top job suits Dack just fine

Caretaker manager Jimmy Dack admits he is enjoying being in the hot seat after leading Newport to a 2-1 victory at Wycombe.

Since Justin Edinburgh left to manage Gillingham, Dack has been handed the Exiles reins and took his troops to Adams Park looking for a first win in six games. And Dack duly delivered as Yan Klukowski scored in each half - either side of a Fred Onyedinma effort for the hosts - as County enacted some revenge for a 2-0 defeat to the Chairboys on opening day. "I'm starting to enjoy the job now after a whirlwind start," Dack said. "I'm here to work with this group of players and it's easy to do as they're an honest bunch and a good group of players. "I have worked here for nearly four years now and all I'm going to do is get my head down and work hard for the players, the directors and most of all the supporters. "I want to see if I carry on enjoying it and then we'll see. I've always been a number two but they're a great group of boys in that dressing room and they're making it tough for me not to want the job. "I've said to the players that it's almost March and we're sitting sixth in the league and that's not by luck. It's from hard work and that's what we're going to continue to do. "That huddle at the end there was for the players and for the supporters. We're unbeaten in two now and this team can bounce back very quickly. We've got going again and let's build on that going forward." Wycombe stay third despite the defeat but boss Gareth Ainsworth believes his side deserved something from the visit of Newport. "It was a sucker punch to concede when we did in the second half," Ainsworth said. "I don't know how the referee has given the foul in the build-up. He's been conned. "But we have to defend the free-kick which we didn't do, but it's hard to take because the game has turned on that moment. "First half we weren't sharp or intense enough and I had to get them fired up with a few stern words during half-time. I don't know why we were so flat but we need to be starting games like we're finishing them and then we'll be back on track. "We deserved something but when you don't stick your chances away you don't pick up points. "The boys are down but it's individual errors and set-plays which we can work on - it's not like teams are tearing us apart like last season. We've lost two games but we're still in the top three so that shows how good the boys have been all season."
