Sheridan cools promotion talk

John Sheridan is refusing to even think about promotion despite Plymouth downing Wycombe 2-0 to climb back into the play-off places.

First-half strikes from Lewis Alessandra and Peter Hartley were enough for Argyle, who controlled Tuesday's clash at Adams Park and in truth the margin could have been even greater. Sheridan was thrilled to have turned around a run of one win in eight games to register back-to-back victories in League Two, but insisted his men will only be looking one game in front of them. "I thought it was an excellent performance against a really tough team who are going well," he said. "The game plan went really well in the first half. I made the lads watch the DVD of Wycombe's last game and they were playing a very high line there. "So our tactics worked a treat and Lewis Alessandra and Reuben Reid were a real threat, causing lots of problems. "We fully deserved our two goals as we dominated the game first half. Then we had something to hang on to and I thought we saw it out really well. "You can see the difference in the team now we've got some players back in, there's a bit more aggression there and people who do the ugly things well. "But we're not getting carried away and we're only concentrating on winning the next game. We've just got to stay in the mix and you never know what will happen come the end of the season." Meanwhile Gareth Ainsworth is expecting a reaction from Wycombe on Saturday after their 12-game unbeaten run in the league was shattered. The Chairboys have still not won a midweek league game at home since March 2012, but Ainsworth instead blamed the lacklustre performance. He said: "It's more the curse of Plymouth I think, as we've not had a very good record against them at home. "We were very poor to be honest, and we gave two goals away which is very disappointing and unlike us this season. "We didn't create enough either so it was just one of those days; a bad day at the office. "The players don't need to know from me how bad they were, they're feeling pretty down in the dressing room. "So I said to them that we've been fantastic up to this point, so let's take this as a real kick up the backside and start another run on Saturday. "I thought the fans were great and at full-time to clap the boys off like they did was magnificent. I'm gutted for them but they know what we've done this season and how far we've come."
