Charlton Athletic say talks to sign former Preston striker Paul Hayes are at an 'advanced' stage.

Charlton hope to beat two other clubs to signing of striker

Charlton Athletic are closing in on the signing of Paul Hayes after confirming negotiations for the striker are at an advanced stage. Skysports.com revealed earlier this month that the Addicks had lined up a move for Hayes to boost the club's promotion prospects for next season. Hayes was released by Preston North End earlier this week after his contract was cancelled and has several clubs on his trail. However, Charlton have expressed confidence that they can beat two clubs who competed in last season's Championship to the capture of Hayes. The 27-year-old had only joined Preston last summer from Scunthorpe United and scored twice in 23 Championship appearances. He also had a spell on loan at former club Barnsley, while both Sheffield United and Scunthorpe have been linked with summer bids.
