Hill bemoans O'Connell recall

Rochdale boss Keith Hill has questioned Brentford's recall of on-loan defender Jack O'Connell.

The centre-half, who turned 21 on Sunday, has been on loan at Spotland since the start of the season, initially joining from previous club Blackburn before returning after signing for the Bees in January.

O'Connell has been an integral part of Dale's play-off bid in League One and scored the winner in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Yeovil which moved them into the top six.

That has prompted Brentford to bring O'Connell back to Griffin Park for the run-in, where boss Mark Warburton expects him to be involved, but Hill does not want to see him sat on the bench.

"It's a pity but he has left us on a good note," Hill said. "He has been so big an influence in what we have achieved over the last two seasons.

"I think he is a marvellous player, I'm not Mark Warburton or anyone on the Brentford coaching staff but the last thing he needs at this time is to be sat on his backside playing bounce matches or against Under-21 opposition.

"He is a man now and he needs to be playing men's football and I really hope he gets a chance to play Championship football."

Warburton said of his recall: "Jack has shown his quality during his loan spell at Rochdale.

"He has got some important match time under his belt.

"He will now come back to us for the run-in.

"We have lots of important matches coming up and Jack will be a valuable member of our squad for the final weeks of the season."
