Gradi aims to finalise bids for Collis and Zola

Crewe Alexandra are optimistic of finalising deals for goalkeeper Steve Collis and Tranmere Rovers striker Calvin Zola. Collis is available on a free transfer after being released by Southend United at the end of last season and has held talks with Crewe. The League One club's technical director Dario Gradi is now awaiting a response from the keeper's agent Rachel Anderson, but hopes an agreement can be reached. "He has gone away to think things over because his young family would have to move up to the area, but I would be flabbergasted if I don't hear from him or Rachel sometime soon because they were very good," Gradi told the club's official website. "I am optimistic of a deal being done, but my experience tells me that you can never be totally sure. If he comes then that's great and he will start as our No.1. "We'll have to see what happens, but I expect an answer sometime this week one way or another."

No.1 target

The Railwaymen are also looking to tie up a move for Zola after ending their interest in signing Anthony Elding from Leeds United. Gradi added: "Our No.1 target is Calvin Zola and that has always been the case. We feel he is the big one that will make a difference to us. "We hope that will be resolved in the next fortnight when we will be asked to attend a hearing over his work permit application. "He is keen to come here and we remain optimistic that he will be joining us for pre-season training. Of course, any deal is subject to him getting the work permit."
