Rochdale boss Steve Parkin has released six of his squad as he begins preparations for next season.

Wayne Evans, Daryl Burgess, Leo Bertos, Greg Heald, Kevin Townson and Leighton McGivern have all been told that their futures lie away from Spotland.

Dale have enjoyed a decent campaign that has seen them finish on the fringes of the play-offs, despite being tipped for the drop in the close-season, but Parkin is nevertheless keen to make changes to his playing staff.

''I wanted to let the players know well in advance because I felt it was the right thing to do, though it's still very difficult whenever it's done,'' Parkin told the club's official website.

''It's never easy telling a player he doesn't fit into your plans for the future, especially after a good season, but I have to look at getting new players in as soon as possible and to let them know last week means I can get on with it straight away.''

Meanwhile, goalkeeping duo Matthew Gilks and Neil Edwards are considering fresh contract offers.
