Rochdale winger Patrick McCourt has Shamrock Rovers on a free transfer.Rochdale winger Patrick McCourt has joined Eircom League club Shamrock Rovers on a free transfer.
The former Spotland trainee has been on the transfer list since September and was linked with a move to League Two rivals Macclesfield Town.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 international had a trial with Terry Butcher's Motherwell in Scotland last month, but the player has agreed to join former Carlisle United boss Roddy Collins at the Dublin-based club ahead of the new Eircom League season in March.
McCourt was disappointed to see his time at Dale come to an end, but stressed the need to be playing first team football was crucial for him at this stage.
"I'm really, really disappointed to be leaving, but perhaps now is the time," McCourt told the club's official website.
"I have enjoyed some brilliant times as a Rochdale player, but I've had a good offer back in Ireland from Shamrock Rovers and it represents an excellent opportunity for me.
"What I need is first team football and hopefully this is something Shamrock can offer.
"I will always have Rochdale in my blood and I'll continue to look out for how they are doing and you never know, I might return one day."
