Queens Park Rangers closed in on the leaders with a 2-1 win at Stockport County, while Chesterfield grabbed only their second win of the season against Port Vale and bottom side Wycombe tasted defeat once more at Swindon.
David Beharall gave Oldham the lead after ten minutes although Paul Wotton drew the leaders back level seven minutes later, before John Sheridan and David Friio (pictured) were both sent off for violent conduct as tempers boiled over at Home Park.
Micky Evans put The Pilgrims ahead in the second half but The Latics struck back with Beharall's second and the visitors held out despite being reduced to nine men late on with Paul Murray's dismissal.

Leon Knight grabbed a brace to earn Brighton a point at Peterborough after they had twice fallen behind at London Road, as goals from Leon McKenzie and Calum Willock put Posh ahead twice.
Sheffield Wednesday's woes continue as they fall further away from the promotion shake-up as Blackpool became the latest side to beat The Owls at Hillsborough, with Scott Taylor's goal proving the difference between the sides.
Onandi Lowe also grabbed a double and his two goals helped Rushden & Diamonds to record a 3-1 win over Grimsby Town after Iain Anderson had given The Mariners the lead at Nene Park, with Richie Hanlon adding a late third for the hosts.
Notts County grabbed a 1-0 win over Hartlepool thanks to Simon Baldry's strike, while Tranmere Rovers and Bournemouth managed to get a goal apiece as Graham Allen's opener was cancelled out by Warren Feeney to earn The Cherries a point on The Wirral.
Bottom side Wycombe Wanderers had more gloom piled upon them by Swindon Town who cruised to a 2-0 win at The County Ground thanks to goals from Deon Burton and Stefani Miglioranzi.
