ROCHDALE may be forced to start the new season without the services of goalkeeper Neil Edwards.

The Spotland number one is still suffering problems with the right hand that he damaged last term.

Edwards last appeared for The Dale in early February before groin, knee and hand problems sidelined him for the rest of last season.

Despite seeing a number of surgeons to try and correct Edwards's hand injury, club physio Andy Thorpe told Rochdale's official website that he does not expect to see the custodian play when the season begins on August 9 at home to Yeovil Town.

"Sadly for Neil, it looks as though he won't be starting the new season because of the hand injury, it's as painful to him now as it was a few months ago," said Thorpe.

"We will be seeing another consultant in the next day or so to hopefully put an end to what has become not only a persistent problem, but a frustrating one for Neil."
