Smith happy with roving role

Bristol Rovers' makeshift midfielder Michael Smith says he is enjoying his new role in Mark McGhee's team.

A full-back by trade, Smith made his first start in the centre of midfield in Saturday's 3-3 draw against Bradford, scoring the first league goal of his career in the process. With that draw meaning the Pirates avoided defeat for only the second time in eight games, the 24-year-old is hoping he will now be able to cement his place in McGhee's starting line-up, He said: "I've never played there before. The gaffer told me on Friday that it was something he was thinking about. I really enjoyed it and I thought I did OK. "It's another string to my bow and it is good to know that the gaffer has enough faith in me to play me in different positions. "I would rather play in one position and nail that down as my own on a regular basis but you have to do whatever is needed to help the team at different times throughout a season."
