12 new contracts on the table but three players are released

Scunthorpe are set to waste no time in preparing for next season by offering 12 players new contracts while releasing three in the process. Key duo Grant McCann and Paul Hayes are amongst those to have been offered new terms after the Championship club staved off relegation from the second tier. The former Barnsley pair are a big part of Nigel Adkins' plans and the Iron boss is also eager to retain Marcus Williams, Cliff Byrne, Sam Togwell, Kenny Milne, Matt Sparrow and Jonathan Forte. Youngsters Niall Canavan, Sam Slocombe, Matt Godden and Rory Coleman will also be offered new deals but the club have confirmed the immediate departure of three others following the conclusion to their season. Teenage defender Jake Picton, 19, has been released along with 21-year-old striker Peter Winn, plus out-of-favour forward Ben May. Former Millwall striker May, 26, initially joined the club on loan from the Lions in 2007 but failed to make a major impact after making the move permanent in 2008. May featured just once from the bench throughout the 2009-10 season and leaves Glanford Park having scored five times in 51 appearances for the club. Winn, meanwhile, signed his first professional contract with Scunthorpe in 2007 and made six appearances for the club around a series of loan spells.
