Bristol Rovers boss John Ward admitted his side were fortunate to avoid defeat in the goalless draw at Southend.
The Shrimpers had more than enough chances to break their five-game duck under new boss Phil Brown but were wasteful and found Rovers goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall in top form. "We have got away with it after Southend missed a few chances in the second half," said Ward. "We nearly snatched it ourselves at the end and, while it wasn't our best performance, we were certainly dogged and determined to make sure we didn't lose. "Southend had some glaring misses but I have a saying which is attitude first, effort second and ability third and we had the first two but we lacked a bit on the ability. "We've managed to keep a clean sheet and get a point and that is pleasing this afternoon, especially for my defenders. "They also accept they got away with a couple of chances which they failed to defend. "I'm looking for my team to move on now because today was frustrating but I am patient with my team and I can't fault them if they try and make the right decisions."
