Bristol Rovers boss Mark McGhee described Neil Etheridge as terrific after he bounced back from an error against Chesterfield.

The on-loan Fulham goalkeeper ended up behind his goal-line with the ball in his hands after collecting a harmless cross in the 21st minute but went on to make a string of vital saves as his side picked up a much-needed 3-2 victory.

McGhee told Rovers' official website: "The first goal was a freak, I am not quite sure what happened to Neil, I thought he had lost it in the sun, but he just lost his bearings.

"It is very unusual for him as he has been absolutely brilliant and made some great saves again, so we forgive him for that. He is a terrific lad, with a terrific attitude, and it was just one of these things."

Striker Tom Eaves played a big part in helping ease Etheridge's blushes with a man of the match performance and the winning goal to end their four-game losing streak.

"For a player on loan to show such commitment to the cause and pick up from his disappointment on Tuesday night, I think shows that Tom has great character and we are thrilled to have him here,"

McGhee said. "We feel as if we play Tom to his strengths, he can do what he has done."
