Torquay moved above Shrewsbury after a 1-0 win at Plainmoor which leaves the Gulls outside the automatic promotion spots only on goal difference.
The only goal of the game arrived midway through the second half as Taiwo Atieno's effort secured a ninth home success of the season for Torquay.
Bristol Rovers' revival under Mark McGhee shows no sign of slowing down following a 2-1 home win over Morecambe.
Lee Brown's goal and Scott McGleish's penalty had Rovers in command before Kevin Ellison replied with a consolation for Morecambe two minutes from time.
