Motherwell chairman says club want to keep manager

Motherwell chairman John Boyle says the club will do everything it can to keep hold of boss Mark McGhee amid speculation linking him to Celtic. McGhee is 5-1 third favourite with Sky Bet to become the new boss at Parkhead after his close friend Gordon Strachan left after four years at the helm. But Boyle told Sky Sports News that Celtic have not been in touch concerning McGhee and all talk at present is simply 'speculation'. He said: "Nobody from Celtic, or any other team for that matter, has attempted to speak to me and I haven't spoken to Mark McGhee.

Wonderful asset

"But we will do everything we can to hold on to our manager, he's a great manager, a wonderful asset to our team. "He's been a great motivational figure over the last two seasons and anything we can do we will do (to keep him). "But as yet, everything is speculation and that is the state of play. "I can't make any other comment other than we will do everything we can to hold on to him."
Clarkson views
The club's top scorer David Clarkson could also not shed any more light on the speculation when contacted by Sky Sports News. He said McGhee is a "really good manager" who has done a great job at Fir Park when asked if he was the sort of character who could deal with the pressures of managing at Celtic Park. "I think he obviously has his sights set high as well so I'm sure if he was to go then I'm sure he would do well," said Clarkson, who added "you don't know what is going to happen" in football when asked if he thought McGhee would still be at Fir Park next season. "But obviously as players you've just got to concentrate and we'll wait and see what happens." Well have qualified for the Europa League next season and Clarkson, who netted 14 goals this term, said: "It's great - as players obviously want to play in big games and the Europa League is a big stage so I'm looking forward to it, hopefully I can do my best and hopefully the team can do well."
