STOCKPORT COUNTY`S plans for the new season have been thrown into disarray following confirmation that Aaron Wilbraham faces three months on the sidelines.

The powerful striker aggravated an existing back injury during a pre-season friendly with Southport, and the club`s medical staff have decided surgery is the best course of action.

Hatters assistant manager Kevin Richardson said: "Alby suffered a little reaction to his back at the weekend and the advice we've been given by the medical team is that he should have an operation to try and clear up the problem.

"He could carry on but that wouldn't be fair to the lad or the rest of the squad."

Richardson attempted to take a positive from the situation, adding on the club`s website: "It's rough luck on Alby, but if the operation is a success he will be back in action in November and it will be like signing a new player."

The Hatters suffered relegation to the Second Division last term, and manager Carlton Palmer was looking to centre his attack around Wilbraham as they attempt to bounce back to Division One at the first time of asking.
