Mellon focusing on Cheltenham

Micky Mellon has his eyes on Cheltenham next after his Shrewsbury side moved to the brink of promotion with a 1-0 win over York.

An early header from Mark Ellis proved enough to secure the points and put the Shrews within one win from a return to League One. The Minstermen pushed Shrewsbury all the way and forced three fine saves from impressive home goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler. Luke Summerfield, facing his former club, also struck a post while Shaun Miller had a late goal ruled out for offside for the visitors. But the only thing that mattered to Mellon was the three points and he can now turn his attention to the relegation-battling Robins. He said: "We go down to Cheltenham now. We'll want to go down there and win anyway regardless of anything that was happening so for us nothing much changes. "We'll get dusted down and get the boys ready and we'll have a good go of going down to Cheltenham and trying to win another game of football." Mellon was pleased with his side's efforts as they notched a seventh win in eight games on a day they also set a new club record for the most Football League clean sheets (22) in a season. "It's three massive points and we got what we wanted to end the day with so I'm absolutely delighted with another really valuable three points," he said. "It's a fantastic clean sheet so I think we've broken that record and set a new one now so all credit to the boys for that as well." Shrewsbury had chances to add to their lead, most notably in the first half, when York keeper Michael Ingham made three sharp saves. Mellon added: "We couldn't quite get the second but it was a massively important day and there were a lot of nerves bouncing around the ground so fair play to the players - we've got another valuable three points." York manager Russ Wilcox saluted his team's efforts. "The only disappointment was the goal we conceded," said Wilcox. "We pride ourselves on being good in both boxes, scoring four goals from corners in the last five games, so to concede a soft goal after being the dominant team for the first 10 minutes was disappointing. "We spoke at half-time about being brave with the ball and I thought second half we were tremendous, we were outstanding, and we've got to remember where we were coming to. "We were coming to a team that's lost one game all season at home, won 17 at home, and I thought second half we were again the dominant team, moved the ball around the pitch and created opportunities." Wilcox felt his team were unfortunate to see sub Miller's late effort chalked off for offside. "Shaun Miller's goal was onside so that's the disappointment," he added. "We didn't get the big decision. "The big decisions seem to always go to the top end, not the bottom end, and we thoroughly deserved a point at least today, but I'm very proud of the players."
