Mellon pleased to pip Stevenage

Micky Mellon was happy to see Shrewsbury edge a "terrific game" when James Collins grabbed the winner in a 3-2 win over Stevenage.

Collins raced on to a fine pass from Mickey Demetriou to rifle in an 88th-minute winner, his second goal of the game, as the Shrews, who remain unbeaten at Greenhous Meadow in Sky Bet League Two this season, left it late to seal maximum points. Stevenage had earlier led through Adam Marriott during an open first half which ended with the sides level at 2-2. Shrewsbury had turned the match on its head in with Collins firing his first goal of the afternoon and then being hacked down by Dean Wells for a penalty converted by skipper Liam Lawrence. Wells levelled prior to the break before Collins' late winner. Mellon said: "First and foremost, I've got to say I thought it was a really good game. "All credit to Stevenage for coming and having a right go. We had to stand up to that. I thought it was a terrific game and obviously we've got the three points so we're delighted with that." Shrewsbury have made a habit of scoring vital late goals in matches this season, a pattern which has pleased the manager. "The stats are there for everybody to see," said Mellon. "We keep going and we keep pegging away. We had three or four clear-cut chances that we never took. If I was standing here and we hadn't won I think I would be pointing at those four. "I don't think there's a person in the stadium, well, maybe one or two, who would say that we didn't deserve to win, but I thought it was a really good game of football. "I'm delighted that we've won this game of football, but nothing's been achieved yet. It's a fantastic win on a Saturday afternoon but there's still a lot of games still to be played, but I'll enjoy my weekend now." Stevenage arrived at the Greenhous Meadow on a blistering run of form having collected 16 points from their previous six undefeated games. They contributed much to an entertaining game but manager Graham Westley was left disappointed at emerging empty handed. "Going into the last 10 minutes we could have won it and we did lose it," said Westley. "There were a couple of great moments for us, Wellsy with the header that just went over and the goalkeeper made a very good save from Dean Parrett's free-kick. "Then, at the other end, one lapse in concentration. "It was a tough encounter with both sides having a crack at trying to win it and them doing what they've done consistently here and winning the three points at home." Westley was frustrated with the manner of the Shrewsbury equaliser as he felt Marriott had been fouled in the move which led to the goal. He added: "It was a solid start. We got on top of the game. We took the game to them. We wanted to come here and score goals and try and win the game. We knew they had a good defensive record but we saw the weaknesses in their set up. "It was a perfect start. We were disappointed to concede after we thought there was a foul."
