Micky Mellon was pleased with Shrewsbury's performance against Chelsea but declared himself "gutted" by the 2-1 defeat.
The Sky Bet League Two promotion hopefuls looked relatively untroubled in the opening period, but were caught napping by a swift Chelsea attack early in the second half.
However, just as the hosts looked to have ran out of steam, Andy Mangan lifted the roof off Greenhous Meadow by netting an late equaliser.
Yet, it was not meant to be, and Jermanine Grandison's own goal restored Chelsea's lead, and ensured the Blues progressed to the quarter-finals.
"I just said to the players there, if someone would have said that we would have felt gutted and disappointed at the end of a game against Chelsea, we probably would have taken that emotion," Mellon told Sky Sports.
"It meant we would have been pleased, but we're gutted because we lost it on little bits of detail.
"Losing a goal so early in the second half and then, when we had good possession of the ball on the far side, we fall and they catch us on the break.
"That's why they're where they are."
