Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon has handed Liam Lawrence the captain's armband ahead of the new League Two campaign.

The 32-year-old former Republic of Ireland midfielder joined the Shrews this summer and has a wealth of experience from previous stints with clubs such as Stoke, Portsmouth, Cardiff and PAOK Salonika.

"We've had a chat amongst everyone and we are going to go with Liam Lawrence as captain for the season ahead," revealed Mellon on the club's official website.

"With the experience he's had and the example he shows everyone and the way he conducts himself both on and off the training pitch, he is an example to all players.

"He is a good guy and I communicate well with him and with the dressing room through him. I believe that he will have an all-round influence with everyone at the football club."
