Shrewsbury manager Micky Mellon has praised Connor Goldson after the defender signed a new contract last week.

Goldson put an end to the uncertainty surrounding his future by finally agreeing to a new two-year deal at Greenhous Meadow, despite the reported interest from several Premier League clubs and Mellon feels it marks the progress made at the club. Speaking to the club's official website, the manager said: "I'm delighted for the Football Club that we've retained a fantastic young player in Connor. "He was respectful to us all the way through and kept us up to speed with everything. "It's felt like a long, drawn out process but we have to respect that the lad did have opportunities to go to some Premier League clubs. "He stayed patient, we kept talking to him and he's enjoyed this week's training and likes the way we want to do things. "We know what areas he has to work on and how we can keep pushing his career forward. "I have no doubt that if he keeps on training the way he's training and applying himself the way he does, then his opportunity will most definitely come at some stage." The 21-year-old has racked up 66 appearances for the Shrews since signing professional terms in 2010 and spent a period on loan at Cheltenham last season.
