Turner to address winless start

Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner is aiming to bolster his ranks and iron out the causes of a winless start to the new campaign.

Town followed up a season-opening goalless draw with MK Dons and a Capital One Cup defeat at the hand of Bolton with Saturday's disappointing 3-0 defeat at Leyton Orient. Turner will use the next five days - free of a midweek fixture - to hopefully turn things around at this early stage of the season, while he also knows the pursuit of new additions to boost his threadbare squad goes on. "I think there's two aspects (this week) - strengthening the squad and working on things in training and keeping spirits up and direction into what we want to do," he said. "We'll invite the players to say how they feel about it and I think their belief is that we're certainly better than the 3-0 scoreline on Saturday, we've got to keep doing what we've worked at through pre-season." Bringing in more attacking options is certain to be high on Turner's list of priorities, although it is hoped on-loan Birmingham striker Akwasi Asante can return to training following his hamstring injury. But the Shropshire outfit are robbed of the chance to work with new recruit Graham Burke, who is with the Republic of Ireland's Under-21 squad for their European Championship qualifier in the Faroe Islands. "Unfortunately he's away next week with the Irish Under-21s so we won't see much of him," Turner added. "We would have obviously looked forward to him spending a week with us and it came as a surprise last Thursday when he told me he was away at the Faroe Islands, he'll be back in with us on Friday. "We're hoping maybe we'll get Akwasi fit, James Tavernier fit but Dave Winfield hasn't got a chance. They would make a difference."
