Lilywhites boss unhappy with squad depth

Preston manager Alan Irvine has confirmed he would like to sign at least five new faces before the transfer window closes. The Lilywhites are short of midfielders following Paul McKenna and Simon Whaley's departures, although they are close to signing two new players. Preston have agreed a fee with Cardiff for Paul Parry while Irvine is also hoping to tie up a deal for Ipswich's Velice Sumulikoski. "At the moment we're very short in midfield," he told Sky Sports News. "We've got five midfielders for four positions.

Quality

"Obviously we can't go into the season like that. We need to add some quality to that group. "We've lost a couple of important players in McKenna and Whaley and we're looking to replace them. "We need to sign some players there's no question about it. Unfortunately signing players these days seems to take an awful long time. "I'd love to sign five, but probably a lot of other managers would like to sign five as well. "We're working away at the moment. I'm hoping we'll have a couple of new faces before the season starts."
