Joy for Spireites and Chairboys, but despair for Imps

Chesterfield took the title and Wycombe celebrated promotion as Lincoln slipped out of the Football League. Elsewhere, Stevenage and Torquay booked play-off berths, leaving Gillingham to reflect on what might have been. Chesterfield entered the final round of fixtures knowing that a point would be enough to see them promoted as champions, but ended the day with three more added to their tally after seeing off Gillingham 3-1 - dashing the Gills' play-off dreams in the process. Bury failed to put pressure on the Spireites after being held 3-3 away at Stevenage, in a game which saw the hosts nail down a top-seven finish. Wycombe will join the Spireites and Shakers in League One next season, with goals from Scott Donnelly, Ben Strevens and Scott Rendell helping them to a 3-1 victory over Southend. Shrewsbury did their best to pip the Chairboys to the post, but a 3-0 win at home to Oxford was not enough to lift them into the automatic promotion places. Accrington left it late to salvage a point against Burton but will enter the play-offs unbeaten in 13 games following a 1-1 stalemate at the Pirelli Stadium.

Missed out

Torquay found themselves outside the top seven for much of the afternoon, as they went down 3-1 at Rotherham, but will be involved in the end of season shake-up after seeing Gillingham slip up late on at the B2net Stadium. Barnet knew they were relying on other results to go their way as they battled to preserve their League status, and were thankful to an Izale McLeod penalty for helping them past Port Vale. That result allowed the Bees to clamber out of the drop zone and above Lincoln, who went down with a whimper as they saw their winless run stretched to 11 games in a 3-0 defeat to Aldershot. Stockport were already down heading into the weekend but salvaged some pride as they netted a last-gasp leveller in a 1-1 draw with Cheltenham. Crewe put in the most convincing performance of the weekend as braces from Shaun Miller and Danny Shelley helped them ease to a 5-1 victory over Bradford. Northampton signed off with a win as goals from Kevin Thornton and Ben Tozer proved to be the undoing of Morecambe. The final game on a busy afternoon of fourth tier action saw Macclesfield hold Hereford to a 1-1 draw at Moss Rose.
