Smith takes longer route

Michael Smith hopes his loan spell with AFC Wimbledon will enhance his chances of making the breakthrough at Charlton.

The 21-year-old striker moved to Kingsmeadow in August on a deal until January and has so far scored five goals. Addicks boss Chris Powell recently handed a debut to youngster Joe Pigott and Smith hopes to eventually follow in his fellow forward's footsteps. He said: "I've been keeping in touch with all the events at Charlton, the gaffer lives not far away so I've spoken to him a few times. "I was over the moon to see Pigs make his debut against Millwall. He thoroughly deserves it and it's nice to see the gaffer giving players from the development squad a chance. "Hopefully I'll return a more rounded player and be pushing for selection myself."
