Liverpool head to Exeter and Scunthorpe entertain Newcastle

Exeter City will entertain Liverpool in the second round of the Carling Cup, while Newcastle United travel to Scunthorpe United. Premier League giants Liverpool were famously knocked out of the competition by Northampton Town last season and will be anxious to avoid another giant-killing at the hands of Paul Tisdale's Exeter at St James Park. Newcastle, meanwhile, were the victims of an FA Cup upset at the hands of Stevenage last term and Alan Pardew will hope for better luck away to League One side Scunthorpe. There are also several ties which pit Premier League clubs against League Two opposition, including promoted Swansea City heading to Shrewsbury Town. Aston Villa are at home to Hereford United, Bolton Wanderers are at home to Macclesfield Town, while Northampton will have another top-flight scalp in their sights when Wolves visit Sixfields. Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City are at home to Rochdale and MK Dons respectively, while Blackburn Rovers welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Ewood Park. Everton play host to Sheffield United, Sunderland travel to Brighton & Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion are away to Bournemouth. Football League new boys Crawley Town could face Premier League opposition at home in the guise of Wigan Athletic if Steve Evans' side can overcome Crystal Palace. Outside of the top flight and there is a Yorkshire derby as Doncaster Rovers are at home to Leeds United, while Huddersfield Town travel to Cardiff City. Barnet and Morecambe both won away at Championship opposition in the first round and have the same opportunity in the second round after being drawn away to Burnley and Millwall respectively. Bury also knocked out a second-tier side in the first round and will welcome ambitious Leicester City to Gigg Lane.
