Clough close to signing left-back to replace McEveley

Derby County have decided to release Jay McEveley and Gary Teale as Nigel Clough closes on a new left-back. McEveley and Teale's contracts expire in the summer and the pair are not being rewarded with new deals by the Championship club. Clough, who is still to announce a decision on the futures of Lewis Price and Lee Hendrie, is keen to freshen up his Derby squad for next season. "It is always hard to tell players they don't have an offer on the table," Clough told the club's official website.

Model professionals

"Both players have served Derby County well, but we felt we needed a break from the past. Jay and Gary are model professionals and I am sure they will get fixed up elsewhere." McEveley and Teale were signed by Billy Davies in January 2007 and helped Derby win promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. McEveley, 24, made 101 appearances in all competitions and scored six goals. Teale, 31, made 104 appearances for the club, scoring five times. Rams boss Clough has already lined up a replacement for McEveley at left-back as he looks to provide competition for Dean Moxey. He added: "We have got a left-back in mind that, hopefully, we can sort out next week."
