Andy Nicholas has snubbed a move to Stockport and signed a new one-year contract at Swindon Town.

Stockport boss Jim Gannon had expressed an interest in signing the former Liverpool trainee.

But the 23-year-old says he always wanted to remain at the County Ground and is happy to have finally signed a new deal with Paul Sturrock's side.

"I was always planning to stay here and I think the manager always wanted me to," Nicholas told the Swindon Advertiser.

"It was just a case of getting everything sorted and now we have, I can look forward to the new season.

"Competition for places is how it should be and I would not expect anything else. It is down to us to prove we are worth a place when pre-season starts.

"The manager seems to have added some good players but we all start with clean slates and hopefully I can do enough to get my shirt."
