Andy Nicholas wants to sign a new contract at Swindon Town, rather than join Stockport County.

The defender is waiting for a firm offer from Swindon following talks with manager Paul Sturrock.

With Nicholas soon to be a free agent, Stockport boss Jim Gannon has expressed an interest in signing the former Liverpool trainee.

But the stopper admits he would prefer to stay at the County Ground following Swindon's return to League One.

"After all the hard work we did last year, and with Paul Sturrock coming in and moving us forward, everyone wants to stay," Nicholas told the Swindon Advertiser.

"Paul has been there and done it, and in a couple of seasons I think we can be a force to be reckoned with.

"No disrespect to Jim Gannon and Stockport County, because they are a very good football club, but I want to stay with Swindon.

"Footballers want to play at the highest level they can - it's not rocket science. If the manager wants me to stay, then I want to stay."
