Paul Downing has hailed Walsall's youth academy that provided six of the Saddlers' starting line-up at the weekend.

Dean Smith's men were held to a goalless draw by Colchester at the Banks's Stadium and still await their first league win of the campaign. Walsall's plight has not been helped by a growing injury list that contains Sam Mantom, Ashley Grimes, James Chambers, Jordan Cook, Matt Preston and Ben Purkiss. But defender Downing believes the players who have stepped up in their absence have done themselves and the club proud. He told the club's official website: "The young lads have been doing really well on the training pitch and deserve their chance. Due to the injury situation they have been able to showcase what they can do and it really does bode well for the future. "Producing our own players is the way that the club wants to go and it's working well for us."
