Jamie Paterson came in for special praise after his super strike at the Banks's Stadium gave Walsall their third win in four games.

Manager Dean Smith said it needed something special to beat Stevenage, and the 20-year-old hammered a the only goal of the game into the roof of the net. It was Paterson's seventh goal of the season and Smith said: "The goal was a bit special and I'm really pleased for Jamie because he is getting better and better. "I thought the result was what we deserved. "Stevenage were very dogged and tough to break down, but we upped the tempo after I told the players at half time that they must quicken things up. "We have now taken nine points out of 12, and looking back it could have been 15. It was a hard fought win, and we have another tough game against Portsmouth on Friday night, and they will be looking to bounce back from defeat."
