Smith laments slow starters

Walsall manager Dean Smith said his team struggled to get out of their blocks as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Oldham.

The Saddlers went behind to a deflected effort in the 29th minute, but could not find a rhythm and tempo to get back into the game. "As soon as they scored their goal it puts us on the back foot. It was deflected and we never really got ourselves going," said Smith. "It's always important to get the first goal in this stadium because it's not the biggest of pitches and people can sit behind the wall, then break on us. "We needed to get a tempo to build an atmosphere and get the fans going, but we never really did that until the last 10 minutes. "But I cannot question the work ethic of my players. We just lacked a bit of quality in the final third."
