Dean Smith praised two-goal signing Ryan Jarvis for his role in Walsall's 2-0 win over League One rivals Bournemouth at Dean Court.
Jarvis was making his full Walsall debut, having spent a frustrating previous season on the bench at Leyton Orient.
He fired Walsall into a 15th-minute lead from the penalty spot and clinched the points with a near-post header 10 minutes into the second half.
"I had no qualms about putting him in when Jon Macken pulled out injured," said Saddlers boss Smith.
"I know what Ryan Jarvis can do and knew what I was getting when I signed him. Hopefully, he'll prove a few doubters wrong," Smith said.
"Ryan's all-round contribution was fantastic. It wasn't just his goals but his all round play that impressed me. His hold-up play was good, as was his work down the lines. He looked bright when he scored for the reserves in midweek and he's set his stall with the two goals he scored."
