Walsall have offered a trio of midfielders new contracts, whilst axing goalkeeper Mark Paston.

Saddlers boss Paul Merson is already planning for next season and has handed Joe Broad (pictured), Kris Taylor and Mark Wright the chance to stay at The Bescot Stadium.

All three players have been rewarded with two-year deals, with Merson outlining the reason behind why he is looking to next term already.

"It is important that I keep my young lads together," Merson told the club's official website.

"I have offered new deals to Joe Broad, Kris Taylor and Mark Wright and at the moment I am awaiting their response.

"With the transfer window coming into play as from next year, it is vital that I build a squad and I am keen to get it together as early as possible."

But Merson has decided that New Zealand shot-stopper Paston does not fit into his plans after terminating his contract by mutual consent.

Paston made 12 appearances for the League One side after joining from Bradford City last summer but is now on the look-out for a new club.

Meanwhile, Southampton have allowed Andrew Surman to stay in the Midlands on loan for the rest of the season, with Merson looking to sign the teenager for next term as well.
