Wilcox delighted with win

Russ Wilcox hailed the best win of his managerial career as 10-man York beat Hartlepool 1-0.

The Minstermen lost Dave Winfield on 44 minutes when he was controversially sent off for a challenge on Brad Walker, but Wilcox's men went on to win courtesy of Luke Summerfield's deflected 67th-minute strike. The win moved York nine points clear of the relegation zone with four fixtures left to play, while Ronnie Moore's Pools team are still just one point above the bottom two. A delighted Wilcox claimed the victory eclipsed everything he achieved as a promotion-winning Scunthorpe chief last season when he set a new Football League record for going 29 matches unbeaten at the start of his reign. He said: "It was an amazing win because of the character of the performance. It was probably the best display since I became a manager because of the organisation, commitment and backing from our outstanding fans. "It was another great day for York City so I'm delighted. I knew from day one that we have good character and people at this club. "Football's not always about pretty football, although we played some good stuff prior to Dave's sending off. It's also about rolling your sleeves up and grafting for your team. "That's what every player did and we were so disciplined as we had to be going down to ten men. We hardly gave away a free kick in the second half. "It was an amazing performance from a great set of lads after a red card which I didn't even think was a foul. It was a full-blooded challenge from a 6ft 4in centre half and that's what I want him to do. "I thought their player also made a meal of it and it didn't help either when they surrounded the ref." Moore, meanwhile, has called on his players to show the same passion during a vital run-in, as the 2,024 fans who made the trip to Bootham Crescent. He said: "The fans want to stay up as much as I do and, whilst I know it's nerve-wracking, the players have got to cope with that. I've never seen a more one-sided game but, for all our possession, their keeper did not have to make six or seven world-class saves. "I can see why the referee sent their player off although sometimes those decisions go for you and sometimes they don't and, then, against ten men, a draw would have been the worst-case scenario at that point. "We never created a golden opportunity though and we are desperate for a goalscorer because, if you have one, they win you games like this one and we can't keep relying on Tranmere and Cheltenham losing their games for the rest of the season because that won't happen."
