Sky Bet League Two: Sam Collins and Stephen Pears in caretaker charge of Hartlepool

Sam Collins and Stephen Pears have been placed in caretaker charge of Hartlepool, the League Two club have confirmed.

Pools are managerless after Colin Cooper called time on his 18-month tenure in the wake of Saturday's humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Carlisle - a result which sent them to the bottom of the Football League.

The League Two club are back in action on Tuesday night when Sheffield United visit in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and after taking training on Sunday, Collins, a 37-year-old defender, and Pears, who was Cooper's assistant, will take charge.

A club statement read: "The club can confirm that Sam Collins and Stephen Pears will look after first-team affairs on a temporary basis following the resignation of Colin Cooper.

"Collins and Pears led a training session at Maiden Castle on Sunday morning and the pair will now be in charge for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy game against Sheffield United at The Vic on Tuesday."

Collins is among the favourites to earn the position on a permanent basis, along with Mark Venus and former striker Richie Barker.
