Hartlepool boss Colin Cooper focused on the positives after Tuesday's 3-1 Capital One Cup defeat against Nottingham Forest.
Goals from Radoslaw Majewski, Greg Halford and Matt Derbyshire gave Forest a 3-0 lead before Neil Austin headed in a consolation for Pools 15 minutes from time.
Cooper said: "We are trying to find the right players in the right areas, in the right combinations all over the field.
"Hopefully we can make progress, but we are still getting to know each other.
"I can't ask anything more from the players at the minute, but in the coming months, I will be demanding more quality.
"We will make mistakes but we have to look at them and learn from them. I don't like losing, so we have to find a solution.
"But we also had some good play, we produced some good play to score a goal and we have to build on that now.
"If the lads believe in what they are doing, if we create as many chances against Southend on Saturday, hopefully we can get the right result."
