Hartlepool caretaker boss Micky Barron says Ryan Noble will have to improve if he is to return to the starting line-up.
The Sunderland forward extended his loan deal by a further month on Wednesday but started on the bench for the defeat against Tranmere.
He came off the bench with the game level, but failed to make an impact on proceedings as Pools were beaten 2-0.
"We need to see a lot more from Ryan," Barron told the Hartlepool Mail.
"I was disappointed in him when he came on (against Tranmere), I really was. It was at a time when the game was changing and I wanted him to get the momentum back to us - he didn't do that.
"At times he looked a little bit lazy and like he didn't want to do the ugly side. Unless he does then he won't get in the team."
