Plymouth spirit lifts Sheridan

Plymouth manager John Sheridan expressed his delight as his side hit back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with leaders Burton.

Argyle's central defender Carl McHugh powered home an 86th-minute headed equaliser from Bobby Reid's corner. The late leveller cancelled out Kevin Stewart's 32nd-minute opener, which deflected off McHugh up and over home goalkeeper Luke McCormick and in off the foot of the post. Sheridan said: "Burton are well known for getting 1-0 results and for us to come back from 1-0 down against the side at the top of the table shows a lot of character and it could be a very valuable point in the end." Argyle went close to restoring parity in the 53rd minute when top scorer Reuben Reid's first-time rocket rattled the post. Sheridan said: "I thought it was tight, not a lot between the two teams. A draw was a fair result. "I definitely felt we deserved something out of the game and it was a very good workman-like performance. "It was ugly at times. I just felt our biggest problem was that we didn't keep the ball well enough when we were in comfortable possession. "It was our downfall because I did feel if we had kept the ball better we could have caused them one or two more problems. "But full respect to the players. I said at half-time we could get back into the game. Obviously all goals are poor, but their goal took a deflection and it ends up in the back of the net. "They are a decent team, they are up there for a reason. They are very well organised, they get men behind the ball and keep their shape and sometimes you have got to be patient to break them down. "We kept plugging away and I think the fans appreciated the way we went about the game. "We didn't play great but we kept plugging away and got our rewards in the end and we are still in there." Burton boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink could not hide his disappointment. He said: "It is frustrating especially how we conceded the goal. "There wasn't too much in the game - two organised sides trying to make chances and defending well. "We defended really well. Every time we got in trouble it was because of our own mistakes. "We can't do anything about it now. We have to move on and prepare for the next one. "We were in control of the game. We are going to take the good parts out of the game. "They were not looking like scoring, but it wasn't meant to be. We are in a good position and we have to keep on going. "We take the point and move on to the next match - try and beat Wycombe. "It is a hard place to come. But I wanted three points. "We spent the first 10 minutes on the back foot, but after that we came out and looked dangerous at times. "Now we are looking forward to Monday, it is an important game but they all are at the moment. "We have to remember to play the game and not the occasion."
