Still bemoans Luton defending

Image: John Still: Rues defensive lapses

John Still was left to rue individual mistakes after Luton fell to a fifth successive defeat in losing 3-2 to Wycombe at Kenilworth Road.

Wycombe went ahead after three minutes when a corner was half-cleared and Sam Saunders deflected the follow-up into the net. The hosts were level after seven minutes, though, as Luke Guttridge's shot was parried by Matt Ingram and Elliot Lee tapped the rebound home. Elliot Justham had to save from Joe Jacobson's ambitious free-kick but the visitors retook the lead after 21 minutes when Luke Wilkinson tripped Matthew Bloomfield in the area for a penalty which Paul Hayes converted. Alfie Mawson made it 3-1 in the 31st minute with a superb solo goal, exchanging passes with Hayes before sweeping past Justham. Luton were back in it again five minutes before the break as Michael Harriman's far-post header was volleyed in by the predatory Lee. In the second period, Hayes shot at Justham while Wilkinson put a free header wide. Wycombe wasted a marvellous chance, Sam Wood dragging wide at the back post, while Luton sub Matt Robinson curled well over the bar. Wood could have sewn the game up, fizzing narrowly over, but Luton sub Nathan Oduwa almost rescued a point, his fierce drive being clawed away by Ingram. Still said: "It's not about how we play, we've put in some good performances, it's about mistakes we make. "The penalty was a ridiculous challenge and one of the goals too. From defending great for two seasons, that's where we're falling down at the moment. "The last few games we've played well enough to get something but if you make mistakes it doesn't matter. "It's like the boxer who goes 12 rounds, wins every round, then in the last seconds leaves himself exposed and gets knocked out. "It's not good enough, and that's not good enough from us, but individuals have to do better." Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was naturally delighted his side had taken another big step towards automatic promotion, although he was also left frustrated by the defending on show. He said: "Away from home you want to win that 3-0. We did let some sloppy goals in but we did the damage, kept strong and in the second half we knew we were going to take an onslaught. "This is Luton Town, they're a big club, got a big squad, got a good manager. We defended well with character and defended with fitness. "We changed shape about three times, I think Luton changed shape about five times and it was really a tactical battle second half. Luckily we didn't concede and took all three points."
