Ainsworth rues missed chances

Gareth Ainsworth was left to rue missed chances as Wycombe failed to capitalise on a dominant display to draw 2-2 with Accrington.

Alfie Mawson's deflected strike rescued a point for the promotion-chasing Chairboys, who now sit third in League Two, four points clear of fourth-placed Bury after missing a chance to go top of the table. Ainsworth said: "We had 19 shots on their goal and it's fantastic to create that many chances. "The disappointment is the rate of conversion isn't great but there were some tired legs in a tired game. "We've got four points out of our last two games and I think most people would have took that so if we keep doing that towards the end of the season we'll end up getting promoted. "Their first goal was a bit of a shellshock I think after dominating such a half where we've played some of the best stuff I've seen so far. "Hopefully the fans can remember the first half rather than the start of the second half because it was excellent, creating many chances. "Their keeper has made some great saves to be fair and there were some good blocks from their defenders but it was a bit of a killer blow to concede just before half-time." Wycombe deservedly went ahead when Paul Hayes knocked down Sam Saunders' cross and Scott Davies could not keep Sam Wood's header out. Gornell's tap-in equalised for Accrington right on half-time and the visitors took a shock lead on the hour mark thanks to Piero Mingoia sending a fantastic strike into the top corner. The Chairboys were able to pull themselves level, however, when Saunders' free-kick was cleared as far as Mawson, whose shot took a huge deflection on its way in. Accrington boss John Coleman said: "They're a good side and for long periods they had us on the back foot, which was disappointing for us. "It's not what we set out to do but you've got to give them credit for the way they pushed us back. "The pleasing aspect is that we've dealt with a lot of free kicks into our box and stood firm. "We've scored two smashing goals - I thought we always looked a threat on the counter in the first half but we didn't so much after the first 20 minutes of the second half. "I think once we got our second goal we seemed to sink into our shell and as much as we tried to get out we couldn't seem to get out. "I'm glad that Terry (Gornell) got on the scoresheet because he's worked tirelessly and when you're not getting your goals you feel you're not getting your reward."
