Ward turns down Cheltenham role

John Ward turned down the chance to become Cheltenham's director of football, chairman Paul Baker has confirmed.

After a string of interviews and a 'no' to a return to Whaddon Road from Ward, who managed the Robins between 2003 and 2007, the club decided against appointing a senior figure to work with Russell Milton. "We felt John was what we needed but in the end he decided he didn't want it and that was disappointing as he was the natural choice given the fact we know him so well and he's got a passion for the football club," Baker told the Western Daily Press. "He thought about it but he's really enjoying his life now with his family, he's doing a lot of scouting with a Championship side and is working with the LMA so he's got a lot on his plate already and he just felt this was probably a step too far."
