Brown keen to add to squad

Southend boss Phil Brown has revealed he is looking to bring in "two or three" players this month.

With Cian Bolger and Luke Prosser both currently suspended, the Shrimpers find themselves light in central defence. However, it is the other end of the field that Brown is targeting after his side's woes in front goal this season, scoring just 24 goals in 24 league games. "I'd like to have gone out on January 1 and brought in two strikers. That's the area of concern," he told the official club website. "You look at the AFC Wimbledon JPT game and we were 2-1 up against 10 men. We had seven or eight chances to kill the game off. We just need to be more ruthless and clinical in front of goal. "It's not the biggest squad here, we have six or seven youth players in the squad. We want to add in key areas." The Blues boss remained cautious on exactly how many new faces will enter Roots Hall this month, adding: "I don't want to build everybody's hopes up and then disappoint them. "We're in a good position and in a better place as a squad than this time last season. I want to bring another two or three in, short-term or long-term."
