Portsmouth have announced that club legend Alan McLoughlin has left his position as first-team coach.

The former Fratton Park midfielder, 47, appears to have paid the price for Pompey's slow start to the campaign - the pre-season promotion favourites currently lie 12th in League Two. In a statement the club confirmed that recent discussions had "identified the need for more experience at League One and League Two level within the football operation, requiring a re-structure of the backroom staff". Pompey boss Andy Awford said: "It has been a hard few days. I had a difficult conversation with Alan last week in which I told him I wanted to change things around. "Both the club and I wanted to keep him involved and we have spent the past two or three days exploring a number of possible roles. "In the end all parties have decided it would be best for him if he makes a clean break and I certainly wish Alan all the best, as I have known him for more than 20 years as a friend, team-mate and colleague. He has been a great servant to this club."
