Darren Purse has applied for the vacant manager's job at Oxford, Sky Sports understands.
Oxford are searching for a new manager following the departure of Chris Wilder to Northampton last month.
A number of names have been linked to the vacancy at the Kassam Stadium, but Purse has thrown his hat into the ring for the job.
Purse, who is currently plying his trade for Southern League Premier Division club Chesham United, is keen to take his first steps into management and sees Oxford as the ideal club to begin his coaching career.
The experienced defender, a regular club captain, has been tipped to go into management for some time as he is held in high regard in football circles for the leadership qualities he displayed wherever he has played.
The 36-year-old made his name as a player at Oxford before joining Birmingham City in 1998 and Purse still has a big passion for the club and resides in the area.
