Oxford assistant boss Mickey Lewis feels the U's ground out a 1-0 win over Torquay, Chris Wilder's final game in charge as manager
Wilder ended a five-year spell in charge of Oxford with 1-0 win over Torquay, leaving the U's sixth in the table.
"It's a good three points against a team fighting for their lives in what were really horrible conditions," Lewis said. "The wind was swirling about out there.
"The lads' attitude out there was first class. Deano took his goal well - it was a real good ball in from Ryan (Williams).
"Deano almost got another one but got the ball stuck in his feet.
"Sometimes in a season you have to grind out results and that was the case here."
Oxford skipper Jake Wright sustained a bad gash on his shin in making a dramatic clearance off the line as Billy Bodin prepared to pounce after Kevin Nicholson's 90th minute free-kick was pushed onto the bar by Ryan Clarke.
Wright was stretchered off, and Lewis said: "Jake is going to hospital as a precaution, but we don't think it's as bad as was first feared.
"It was a game-saving header from him, really brave. He went into the netting as a result, and everyone in the ground could see that he'd got a push in the back."
