Northampton caretaker boss Andy King says he is unsure if he will remain in charge of the Cobblers after their 1-0 loss at Burton.
They face Portsmouth on Sunday and King says he saw promising signs despite the defeat which keeps them at the bottom of the table.
"I asked them to be a reflection of me," said King.
"I'm a passionate man who believes football should be played the right way, with commitment and wanting the win.
"I took over a team bottom of the league and I thought I found a lot of those qualities.
"I asked them to show me a platform to build from - and if they'd shown me nothing, there'd have been nowhere I could go and I'd have had to go down the dole office on Monday.
"I still may have to, but at least I'd go with what I felt was a fair reflection of our football.
"I've got players who haven't played for 10 or 12 weeks, and they ran themselves into the ground."
