Nigel Worthington is adamant York are improving in the right areas after his side picked up a 1-1 draw with Wycombe.
Dean Morgan pounced to tap in Matt McClure's 70th-minute shot that had hit the post to earn Wycombe a point, moments after David McGurk had broken the deadlock for the Minstermen.
McGurk got the better of Kortney Hause at the back post following a Ryan Brobbel free-kick but it wasn't enough for York to earn a first win since the opening day of the season.
"I was delighted with our performance, we came in a good frame of mind and we started well," said Worthington.
"Coming here with Wycombe on the back of four very good wins, it is not an easy place to come to. I was delighted with our energy.
"And I thought some of the quality of the play at times was very, very good. The back four is certainly something to build on. There was a lot more resilience from them.
"We are getting our head on things and getting our bodies in the way and that's what good defenders do.
"I think I have said it before, we have had one inept performance this year and that was against AFC Wimbledon the rest, performance-wise, has been pretty good.
"But we just haven't got the rewards for it, so we have just got to keep working hard and try and get the results."
