Southend manager Phil Brown was left infuriated by defeat and the manner of Scunthorpe's winning goal in their 1-0 win.
The Iron grabbed the only goal of the game when Shrimpers left-back Ben Coker misdirected a defensive header into the path of Chris Iwelumo, who nodded home from close range.
"Ben got too much on the header and I bet Chris couldn't believe his luck two yards out," Brown said.
"It's disappointing and in the first half I thought it was one-way traffic from us.
"If we had had someone in the six-yard box when it mattered we could easily have been two or three up.
"However, we gifted them their goal and after that our heads went down.
"That again showed the character I think we're lacking in this team at the moment and we need to bring one or two in to help us manage the game better.
"When Scunthorpe went in front they had that nous you need to be able to see out the game and Deon Burton certainly showed that for them when he came on.
"We've been looking for someone experienced to come in for a few weeks and we will keep on doing that now."
